MASTIHASHOP, NYC REVIEW & GIVEAWAY!

While I was in New York City in December for the Pilates Style Magazine photo shoot,  I passed by this adorable shop I just had to check out called MastihaShop.  I was so excited to meet the owner, Artemis Kohas.  We chatted a while and she told me about the amazing Chios Mastiha…. “Mastiha is the natural and rare tree resin of the pistachio lentiscus var Chia tree.  Scientific research has shown that this resin has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities.  It has been documented from antiquity for its health benefits, its use as the first natural chewing gum and as a cooking spice.  Today, it is still chewed as well as used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and in the culinary world.  Chios Mastiha contributes to a healthy gastrointestinal system and has beneficial effects for both oral hygiene and skin care.”  So cool!  I love this.

MastihaShop highlights and promotes the Mediterranean lifestyle of health, well-being and natural products stemming back centuries.  Read more of their story and incredible vision for the shop here.

NASHVILLE’S JUICE BAR

I’ve gotta tell you about one of my favorite places around Nashville…

THE JUICE BAR!!!

I found this when I started teaching Tye4 Classes in Brentwood, Tn last fall.  It became my “thing” after class :).  I’ve interviewed owners John and Vui Hunt and want to share it with you!

WHEN DID THE JUICE BAR OPEN?
April 2013 in Brentwood, TN

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR JUICE?
Sweet Greens – yummy!
Take a look at the menu here.

CAN WE BUY OTHER HEALTHY FOODS/DRINKS AT THE JUICE BAR?

Absolutely – aside from juices, we have shots of locally grown Wheat Grass and each day we make fresh batches of Spinach/Kale/Quinoa super foods salad, fresh Vietnamese style Spring Rolls with locally grown mint and other goodies; we of course offer whole fruit smoothies with no added sweeteners or fill-agents of any kind – and to these we can add super goodies like chia seeds, hemp seeds, whey protein, spiraling, flax oil, etc…  Also, we partner with several local suppliers such as My Poor Tired Liver, Nola Granola, Nutrisha Snacks and The Hummus Chic to offer their healthy/yummy treats daily.

DO YOU DO ANYTHING FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO ENCOURAGE AND EDUCTE HEALTHY LIVING?
We routinely host community classes in the Juice Bar, opening our doors to most anyone who has a congruent healthy topic to discuss and present;  likewise, we allow our space to be used for pop up dinners from locals such as Chef Michael Martin from Whole Foods, Nutrisha, and some other pending ones.

We also participate in a variety of venues where we give out free samples – Crieve Hall Farmer’s Market and the recent Nashville Film Festival. Upcoming: we are hosting a smoothie making class at a local preschool for the kiddos.  We stay pretty busy!

REVIEW: COLOSSEUM FITNESS APPAREL

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this really cool brand of fitness apparel called COLOSSEUM.  I sent them my size and they sent me a pair of leggings, tank and sports bra.   First reaction… REALLY CUTE!  I was just hoping the size I gave them was gonna work with their brand.  So I tried it all on and was HAPPY it all fit perfectly!  True to size from my experience.
First off, my legs are really long and for me this length was perfect.  They go down to my ankles with little bunching.   They fit my legs perfectly without being too tight.  It was NOT a frustrating moment getting into them.  You know what I mean if you wear these kind of leggings.  The routine of laying on the bed pulling them over your ankles and then working them up the legs to the hips – that did not happen with these pants.  They provide a nice fit without squishing unwanted “stuff” in the wrong place thanks to the body countering seams.  It’s made with C-dri moisture management fabric which allows for fast drying and keeps moisture away from the skin.   I did wear these out on a hot day and could tell a difference from my other long leggings for sure.  Also, I love the details.  There is a reflective strip running vertically along the calf and mesh ventilation panel behind the knee!  Cool stuff.  Perfect for my friend Shannon who was just telling me the other day that she had to seriously wipe down her Pilates Reformer machine after her workout because the back of her knees got so sweaty!  LOL  They do have a back security pocket with with autolock zipper closure and one more detail I like – turn the top down and find a fun shade of green!
I have black, but you can also get them in Charcoal and Pink Raspberry (Super cute!)
So this bra is reversible!!!  LOVE THAT!  You can see from the photo above the pink and black stripes that are a lot of fun.  And below I’m showing the side with solid pink, trimmed out in black.  THE FIT:  Ok, I have a bazillion of these.  My “girls” are on the larger side and I need to give them plenty of support.  But I keep buying soft sports bras in hopes of having one comfortable enough to wear casually.  I think that the fact that I keep buying them can tell us that I’ve not been super happy with what I’ve tried.  Now, 100% honest, I really like this one.  It’s softer and more comfy than any of my others.  No I will not go running or do a plyo workout in this alone, but I can wear it teaching Pilates or just hanging out with a cute summer top.  So I’m very happy with this.  Other cute color options:  Chambray/Black, Lemongrass/Black, White/Black and I am wearing the Pink Raspberry/Black

I really love this tank.  Like the leggings, the tank is also made made with C-dri moisture management fabric.  I like that it’s a cute fitted top without being hot.  I really love the contouring lines that emphasize body lines and the straps are super cute and provide some support and full range of motion.  It has a built-in bra with removable cups.  And ya know when those pads get all messed up…  well these are really easy to straighten up.  Remember our discussion earlier about “support”?  Well this provides enough for a Pilates workout, but I’ll have to add a layer of love when I teach my Tye4® Fusion Class.  It’s important to me to have a top that’s long enough and won’t ride up.  I’m happy to say this one fits the bill.  This Charcoal/Black is my favorite, but it also comes in Pink Raspberry, LT Chambray and White/Citrine which are all very cute.   I absolutely recommend it!

I put both the leggings and the tank to the test with the Pilates Roll-Up… because during this exercise, it’s common for the pants to scoot down while the top scoots up.  If you’ve done Pilates, you know what I’m talking about!  So, after my testing,  I’m happy to say BOTH the leggings and the tank stayed in place!  Whoop Whoop!  Love it!

I did try out my new threads while teaching a Tye4 Fusion Class.  We do Aerobic, Strength and Pilates fitness in this class.  Looking back on the class, I’m realizing that I didn’t think about my clothing at all during the class – meaning they were not fussy, so YES they pass the instructor test!

REVIEW: PowerICE

It was a happy day when the nice delivery guy dropped these off at my door.  Just in time for some beautiful warm weather.  PowerICE is a company who makes frozen hydration bars and I am super happy review their product.  They sent a generous amount that has allowed me to share the love and get some good feedback!  Two big things that caught my eye about this product: they don’t have high fructose corn syrup or artificial preservatives.  You can see the ingredients here.

Years ago I stopped buying these for my kids
image here
because of the HFCS and dyes
and there was much sadness in my house.
So as you can imagine, I was really hoping these icy pops would be just as good and exciting as the ones that have been banned from my house.   The kids were pretty pumped about trying them, so I packed them on ice, threw it all into my cooler bag and we took them with us on our hike.
This was really our first time to try them… and we all thought they were really yummy and refreshing.   I left the cooler bag in the hot car for about an hour, then I took it out when we went down to the river.  After that amount of time, they were melted some, but still very frozen and I was happy about that.

WE TRIED ALL THE FLAVORS
Grape Score
Lime Kicker
Orange Blast
Pomegranate Raspberry Rip

My girl didn’t love the Pomegranate Raspberry so much but really liked the Grape and Orange, my little man was all over Orange Blast and Lime and my fave was Pomegranate Raspberry and Grape.
I shared PowerIce with my class after doing a great cardio/toning workout using Tye4® wearable resistance.  Everyone really loved the PowerICE bars.  Here are some of the things that were said:
“The texture is great, like sonic ice.  Really good.”
“… not so salty and more refreshing then Gatorade”
“Doesn’t leave an after taste like products with artificial ingredients”
Thought that was great feedback and I
happen to agree.

I also put them to the test at the ball field.  As you can see, I was hard at work reviewing this product.  It was very difficult not to sneak into the cooler bag and  help myself to a second one.  I did think it nice of me to practice self control and share with the kids after their game.

Excuse me as I go off on a soap box for a moment:
Parents, if you have kids playing sports, teach them at an early age to be an intentional athlete.  They can learn to give 100% on the field and off the field as well.  This will develop character and life skills that will follow them into all areas of their life.  As a parent, you have the opportunity to teach them how to fuel their body before the game and teach them what they need to do to repair after a game or practice.  This is a fun experience for the kids.  I’ve seen it first hand.  This is a great way to empower our kids to take responsibility over their own health.  Post game snacks are fun and exciting as the kids celebrate their game, but as parents we can choose healthier options to give them.  These PowerICE bars were PERFECT for this b/c I knew they were getting some good stuff to replace electrolytes and they were excited to get a fun treat!
Win Win… Win.

To sum up this PowerICE review, I really like them and so does everyone else I shared them with.  Bam.

REVIEW: AQUAGEAR FILTER BOTTLE

I love water bottles.  Who doesn’t?  But isn’t it the worst to buy a cool one that looks like it’s going to be awesome and it just isn’t?  And what to do when we run out of water while we’re out?  At the gym, I will drink a min of 2 bottles of water during and after my workout and I find myself filling up the bottle at the water fountain.  Ew. This also happens when I take my kids to the park, out on a hike or at the ball field.   #firstworldproblems

So as you can easily see, I was very excited when AquaGear® sent me their filtered water bottle to try out!   Yippee!!!  The filter is on the straw.  The bottle is BPA free.  And it is super cute.

  • It removes up to 99.99% of contaminants in tap water – including chlorine and industrial chemicals
  • The filter is 100% recyclable and replaceable
  • It filters up to 75 gallons of water (approx 400 refills)
  • The bottle is very durable
Not only do they have these cool filtered bottles, they also have emergency food and supplies.  You must go check out their website.

Whether I’m going camping or preparing for the zombie apocalypse, I’m gonna keep this brand in mind.

REVIEW: ADVOCARE 24 DAY CHALLENGE [Day 1-3]

THE 10 DAY CLEANSE PHASE
DAY 1-3
The 24 Day Challenge begins with a cleanse.  This is a gentle tune-up good to do every 90 days.  It’s the same concept as getting an oil change every 3000-ish miles in our vehicles.   This will allow our body to absorb nutrition and function efficiently for energy and repair.

CONFESSION TIME
So, day 1 I mess up.  Yup and I only admit this to hopefully help others NOT do the same.  I know some of you have done this very thing so I realize it’s easy to do.

I rocked this cleanse all day until the very end and forgot to take the herbal cleanse supplement before bed.  Ok, stop laughing.  So for me, day 2 became day 1.  Or I might look at it like I am doing an 11 day cleanse.  So, if you prefer to do the 10 day cleanse, follow my lead from here…

THE REAL DAYS 1-3

START THE DAY with a Spark drink (vitamin energy drink).  I do this everyday anyway.  During the cleanse I am taking 1 Catalyst 30 min. before each meal- a branch chain amino acid that protects your muscle from getting burned as energy.  Also good to take when exercising.

* Let me nerd out for just a minute… On average, we burn 1 calorie per minute doing nothing.  Correction – even when we are doing “nothing” like sleeping, our body is working hard to rebuild and repair.  So, of that 1 calorie/minute burned, about 50% comes from carbohydrates, 50% from fat and 10-15% can come from muscle.  It’s preferable to keep the muscle and burn the fat. Can I get an amen?

30 MINUTES LATER drink a Fiber Drink followed by breakfast.  These days for me have fallen on busy early morning days, so I quickly mixed a Meal Replacement Drink.

* Let’s talk a sec about this Fiber drink.  First, as you can expect, it’s thick.  My suggestion:  use a straw and drink it fast!  The first day I let it sit a minute and ended up using a spoon to “eat” it!  LOL  It was like apple sauce without the flavor.
* When choosing the Fiber drink consider this –  Citrus is like gently scrubbing your intestines to remove build-up, which for many people helps minimize cravings.  Peaches & Cream stays in your system longer and is the great food for the gut.  A note from my Coach, Danielle:  “I typically suggest citrus for the cleanse because it is a little more thorough when it comes to scrubbing.   Peaches & cream is great for maintenance after the challenge since it feeds the probiotics and can help with feeling full.”  ~ Thanks Danielle that’s super helpful!
When it comes to this Fiber drink, listen to The Rock

SNACK TIME:  about 10 am I have a snack

LUNCH TIME:  Follow the guide – real, balanced food

SNACK TIME:  I drink a Spark and then have a snack about 3:00

DINNER TIME:  Take 2 Omega-Plex with this meal

BEFORE BED:  Take the herbal cleanse 🙂

My grocery shopping before starting 24DC.
I’m not going to bore you with all the food I am eating, but I’ll share a few meals and snack here and there.  This is hormone free grass-fed lean ground beef, slightly grilled veggies (normally I cook them to the point of crispy… not so nutritious), avocado and salsa.
 BeFunky_beans1.jpg
 Easy, quick and delicious snacks.
This was my breakfast for the first 3 days of the cleanse.  Berry Meal Replacement is so good.  I also adore the chocolate 🙂  This is my “running out the door” version:  water and powder shaken and dumped into a cup with ice.

And this is my “Oh cool I have 5 more minutes” variation – Blended with ice.
One more thing…we need to drink lots of water!
Things on the cleanse change slightly for the next days.

Be intentional in everything you do!
Stay healthy!

REVIEW: H3O AQUATICS

I’m so excited to tell you about a cool new place to get healthy and fit.  It’s called H3O AQUATICS.
–Health, Healing, Hope, Outreach Aquatics.
They are a medical rehabilitation facility that provides physical therapy, personal training and small group exercise classes in their indoor heated pools.  Read more here. Take a look at all those toys to help get you moving and strong.  I like the parallel bars under the water.

They even have treadmills… in the water!!! Yup these are motorized underwater treadmills.  Super cool.  Run or walk forwards or backwards… or work lateral movements.  There is so much fun to be had right there.

They also have a HydroMessage bed!  Yes ma’am that’s good stuff right there.  I tried it and can honestly say I am positive I want one at my house.   Anyone want to give me one?  No?
Well until then I’m happy to use this one 🙂
You can also rent the space for parties.  We just had my baby’s 13th b-day party there…  Hold on a sec.  Did I just say I have a 13 year old now?  Ugh, I’m going to need a moment….

So back to the review… this was such a fun party!  Had music, lights and plenty of laughing and splashing. And the moms took turns enjoying the HydroMassage bed!  That’s a nice time had by all. The last part of the party we put up a volleyball net and the kids went to town.  So much fun.

TIPS & TOOLS: OUTDOOR FITNESS

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY SARA UPTON
Sara is a recent college grad making her way into the online journalism scene primarily through articles on her biggest passion:  fitness and tech.

The cold winter weather has kept a lot of us stuck inside on treadmills the last few months, when we would rather be pounding the pavement in the sunshine. Thankfully, the last of the late season snow is melting, and the spring and summer weather is finally on its way in. When it starts to warm up, moving your fitness plan outdoors is a great way to shake up an otherwise monotonous routine, but there are a few things you should consider first. Whether you’ve been working out for years, or you’re more a novice, it’s important to remember to take a few basic safety precautions before changing up any workout plan.

Even though running around the park or biking your neighborhood greenway might not make you feel like you’re out battling the elements, you shouldn’t underestimate the effect of being without the comforts that come from working out at home or a gym. For example, you won’t constantly have access to water. Staying hydrated is critical anytime you’re exerting yourself, especially when the temperature heats up. If you’re someone that pauses several times throughout your routine to take a sip, consider investing in a runner’s belt with a bottle holder. You can also opt for an inexpensive hydration pack such as High Sierra’s Wave 70 that you can wear on your back, or FitSip’s pack that you can strap to your wrist. You might not feel you need it now, during the more mild weather, but when the temperature starts to climb, you’ll be happy you have it.

When exercising outdoors, you’ll also have to do without the convenience of grabbing your treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical’s handles, and getting a accurate heart rate report. Monitoring and staying within your target heart rate zone helps you burn the maximum amount of calories and keeps your workouts safe. Samsung highlighted the importance of tracking your heart rate on the go with their new Galaxy S5 design. Verizon Wireless stated that in staying consistent with their dedication to a healthy lifestyle, the S5 will include the first ever built-in heart rate monitor, allowing users to check their heart rate with just the touch of a finger. Samsung is hopeful that the accessibility of the feature will encourage more people to keep track of their heart rate when working out. Pacing yourself within the correct range will allow you a longer, more effective workout in the long run.

You might also be surprised at the impact that different terrains can have your workout. Unless you’re employing specific programs when using a cardio machine, you probably aren’t used to the constant change in incline and the uneven surfaces that come with exercising outdoors. There are several different apps you can use to plan a route suited for your fitness level and goals. AllTrails provides hikers and bikers with detailed maps of nearby trails. Users can check descriptions and reviews of over 50,000 trails in order to determine their trails length, difficulty level, and even exciting stops to make along the way.

It can also be easy to lose track of how far you’ve traveled before you realize you’re tired. However, the added challenge of exercising outdoors is that you have to be able to make your way back, no matter how exhausted you are. MapMyHike GPS is a great app to use as a pedometer, and the voice prompts will alert you over your music when you have reached distance markers you can set yourself. The GPS feature will help you log which directions you take, and save the route you took for future use.

Try not to push yourself too hard when mixing up your routine for the first time, and don’t underestimate the basics. Even seemingly obvious things such as checking the weather for the temperature and humidity can help make or break your workout. When you’re comfortable in the new environment, feel free to kick up the intensity a little and challenging yourself.

Stay smart and grab some fresh air—the pavement is calling your name!
