DIY AFTER-SUN LOTION

I’ve stumbled upon the best solution for my skin after spending a glorious day in the sun.  It’s kinda obvious and super easy and cheap.  I used this for the first time last summer after getting a burn from using a chemical sun screen. BOOOOO!  I normally use a natural brand but this particular pool day I didn’t have any and used my friends.
Read HERE to find out why we switched to natural in the first place.
Anywho, I used this DIY lotion on my burn and it worked better than anything I have ever used, ever!  I applied it at least 4 times a day for the first 3 days.
1.  It seriously soothed the burn.
2.  After a few days, my daughter and I both realized that my skin was super SOFT!  She asked what I was using and asked me to make her some!  lol
3.  And finally, my peeling and itching was minimized.
So from now on we use this:

I have never had frankincense essential oil and I thought this is the perfect season to try it!  Frankincense has a long history dating back thousands of years and has proven to have antiseptic and inflammatory properties.  It was considered an effective remedy for toothaches to leprosy (history.com)
Frankincense was valued greater than gold during ancient times and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, dating from the 16th century BC – an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.  Man that’s a lot.

“They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother.  Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him.  Then they opened their luggage and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11  The Message

Frankincense was used to anoint new born sons of kings and priests… and it was brought as a gift to the new born baby Jesus.  For the purpose of anointing their king and/or a great first aid to stick in her diaper bag, I know Mary was thankful for this gift!

I’m not sure yet how we will use it, but I will apply it to Christmas day somehow.  Any ideas?  Let me know in the comments below!

GUEST PRESENTATION AT SCHOOL – DIY FUN!!!

My daughter, Taylor, attends a super cool school called Cedar Hall.  It’s a school on a farm!  The classical learning style helps develop a love of reading, learning and exploring.
The hands-on “farm” learning teaches the students about life and gives application to what they are learning.
WE LOVE IT!

I was honored last week when I was invited to do a demo and show the kids how easy it is to make chemical-free common household (and school) products.

 IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!
The entire Middle School.

As you can see, I pulled out my stash of goodies from my “chemistry lab” and handed out a sheet with the recipes for them to follow.
Are YOU curious as to what we made???
Well, I thought I’d be a nice blogger and share with you 🙂

We made hand soap and all-purpose spray for both the girls and the boys bathrooms.  Each decided on the essential oil “flavor” they wanted.

TOOTHPASTE
We all made a batch to take home and try out.
* 1 part Baking Soda
* 1 part Coconut Oil
* 5-10 drops of essential oil:
peppermint  spearmint  eucalyptus  grapefruit
lemon  lime  cinnamon  rosemary  orange
* And everyone gets their own toothpaste container!

NO DOUBLE DIPPING IN MY TOOTHPASTE!!!
The spearmint was the most popular, followed by peppermint and orange.  A few tried cinnamon and we decided it “tasted” like those Christmas cinnamon brooms…
so not for me.
I did warn the kids that this tasts/feels salty because of the baking soda.  Add more coconut oil if you want and you can add a little stevia or sugar to sweeten it… but that seems weird to me because we are trying to remove sugars from our teeth, but some recipes add it.
Check out how easy this is on my DIY Toothpaste video.

Right now Tropical Traditions has their Coconut Oil on Sale!
This is no doubt the best quality you can get and I absolutely LOVE this awesome company.

STUFF TO KNOW ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS
* Citrus oils pul toxins out of plastics and should only be used with glass.
* Essential oils should not be used undiluted on the skin.  Some can be used with “carrier oils, waxes,     butters, alcohols, or other diluting measures
* Do not take essential oils internally – especially wintergreen and eucalyptus
* If you’re allergic to a food, you will be allergic to that oil.
* Most essential oils are high in antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral properties… good for cleaning!
* If you use product on a child under 5 yrs, use half the amount of essential oils
* Always test a small area of your skin first to make sure it isn’t  going to irritate your skin

DIY LAVENDER DRYER BALLS

First, I can’t believe how easy this dryer sheet switch is.  Oh, and if you aren’t sure if it’s a big deal to replace what you are use to, read 10 TOXINS LURKING IN YOUR FABRIC SOFTENER
Now there are a few different options here:  Felted Wool Dryer Balls (I read that they come apart in the dryer) or aluminum foil dryer balls (I’ve read mixed reviews and I REALLY want my laundry to smell good!) so I choose to go THE SOCK rout.  I first saw this idea on the CampWander blog.  I took Rebecca’s advice on the first load and choose to use my Lavender Essential Oil.  The first test: our bedroom sheets.  I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with the results!  My sheets are clean, soft, and smell delightful.  I hear that each ball will last 10-15 loads, depending on the brand of the oil you use.  I’ll give you my report in a few more laundry days.

So now it’s your turn!
