Vote For Apple

November 2008 – Jeremy and I decided to get the kids a puppy for Christmas.  We decided we wanted to rescue one but didn’t know what kind.  On Monday we began looking at different breeds and decided a labrador retriever would be good for us.  I don’t know, we looked at adorable puppies for about 10 minutes, and then came across this face

I mean, what do you do after that?

That was it.  

We were done with the search.

thePROBLEM
We were not planning to bring a puppy home until Christmas… and this cute face was needing a home NOW.  So we decided that if she was still available on Wednesday – 2 days later – Jeremy would be off work and would drive 90 miles to get her.  

You know how you aren’t suppose to “move yourself into the house” when you are looking to buy?  Don’t get attached until you know it’s yours?  Well, the same should be said for puppy shopping.  That night I dreamed that this puppy was sleeping on her bed next to my side of the bed.  She started whimpering, I reached down to pet her on the head, and then I woke up.

Oh man I was so mad at myself.  
DUMB!!!!

I didn’t tell Jeremy about my dream.

The next night [Tuesday] I did it again!!!  I dreamed that the cute puppy was running up and down the hall playing with my kids.  She was a part of our family.

OH.   MY.   GOSH.

I did it again!!!  This time I told Jeremy and we agreed that he would leave his early morning meeting and go straight there and get her.  Well, I could’t wait and I called the shelter.  When I asked if puppy number [whatever number she was] was still available, they told me that she was on hold and if they don’t come get her they I would get a call.  NO!!!!  
I cried.

Jeremy called as he left his meeting.  I told him not to go, our puppy was on hold.  Then he said, 
“I know, I called early this morning and put her on hold to make sure no one else got her.”

WooooWhooooo!

So Jeremy drove 90 miles to get our little Apple and 90 miles back home with her curled up on his lap.

We surprised the kids with their early Christmas present!

Try this workout this weekend!  Do it at HOME OR AT YOUR GYM!

  • Remember to warm-up & stretch 5 minutes before you begin.
  •  Be sure to use good form with each exercise.
  • Be creative with the resistance… if you don’t have dumbbells, then use something from your home like a gallon of water!  
 
1. Back Row w/Dumbbell – 30 sec.
2. LUNGE to the next exercise
3. Bench Dips – 30 sec.
 
4. LUNGE to the next exercise
 
5. Bicep Curl – 30 sec. 
 
6. LUNGE to next exercise 
 
7. Push-Ups – 30 sec.
 
8.LUNGE to next exercise
 
9.Squat Jumps – 30 sec.
 
10. LUNGE to next exercise
 
11. Up-Right Row w/Kettle Bell – 30 sec.
 
12. Sprint back to the beginning.

I would order a Painkiller for us.  We first had this drink on a sailing trip in the Fall of 2011.  We sailed to the Island if Jost Van Dyke and relaxed at the Soggy Dollar Bar – home of the original Painkiller.  That drink always takes me back to the islands!  Check out our sailing trip around the British Virgin Islands HERE.

A Letter to the Slow-Carbers

Hey there SLOW CARB FRIENDS!
Can you believe we are in our 6th week!  For many of us it has been extremely hard breaking bad habits, battling cravings and developing a new form of self discipline!  I have heard so many awesome testimonies.  I hope you will pass yours along to encourage others!

WHAT’S NEXT?
 After you do your final weigh-in/measurements/after pictures, pull out the goals and data you recorded at the beginning.  Now answer these questions.  Write it down!
  • How many inches you lost all together? 
  • How much weight did you loose? 
  • How are your clothes fitting now?
  • How do you feel now compared to your old eating style?
  • Did you reach your goal?

NOT REACHED YOUR GOAL YET?
Keep going on the slow carb diet a while longer.  Be sure to include healthy nutritious foods in on your cheat days.

COMING OFF THE SCD?
DO NOT PANIC!  You have set up new habits and cravings that you will continue implementing.  Be smart about moving forward.  Start by adding back healthy foods that you want to eat gradually.  
What I do:  I realize that I can have a slice of Ezekiel bread in the morning with my eggs!  YAY!  This feels like such a treat!!!  I want to also add back my 3pm smoothie.  YES it is super healthy and I feed it to my kids every morning, but it does have more sugar than I’ve had in a while.  Before the diet I would have added 1-2 cups of fruit and some OJ.  Now I am just as happy with 1/2 cup of fruit and water as the base.  

THE GOOD NEWS
  You have the tools now to take control over your eating!  Let’s just say you come off the SCD and after 3 months realize your body is taking backwards steps.  Well, tweak your diet in small ways.  It won’t be nearly as shocking as it was this time!  When I have a beach trip coming up, or some reason I want to drop some body fat, I hop back on the diet for a while. 
 It gets easier and easier!!!

EXERCISE
  For the past 6 weeks you have put your FULL attention and energy into every bite that went into your mouth!  Well now that good habits have been established, it’s time to push into your exercise routine to support your goals.  If you put the same attention into how and what you are doing to exercise, you will set yourself up for continual success!

WARNING
  Don’t think you can add sugars and slow-releasing carbs back into your diet and still participate in CHEAT DAY expecting positive results!  I know, sad.  Cheat day is a part of the slow carb diet and encourages fat loss when done right.  BUT, take the concept into your life!  Make good choices during the week so that you can indulge during appropriate times with NO GUILT!  I mean, would you rather grab at those M&M’s on your co-workers desk all week, or pass them up and enjoy a black and white cupcake from Whole Foods when you go shopping on friday???  
Yes please!

Slow-Carb Sandwich

It was a sandwich for lunch kind of day.  And this is a good way to eat your sandwich. 
 
BoarsHead lunch meat.
Hummus.
Spinach.
Purple onion.
Cucumber.
 
You can add anything you want to it.  This is very good and I like it better now than a bread sandwich.  The only thing… kinda messy.  Keep your napkin close!

5 Random Things About Ashley

It’s important for you to know who your trainer is, 
so here goes.

5 RANDOM THINGS ABOUT ME! 

I have 3 plates and 39 screws in my face.  True!  Before I got married I had TMJ surgery.  It was really tough but I’m glad I did it!  After the surgery, I was not allowed to chew for 6 weeks.  During that time, all I wanted was a sandwich.  I could hardly stand it when I saw other people eating sandwiches.  Not sure why, I never really loved them before???  Anyhoo, I had this long list of foods I was going to eat as soon as the doc gave me the go ahead.  Disappointment:  the first bite I had at that point was mashed potatoes… and it hurt!  Needless to say, it took a little time to recover.  Glad I did it, but glad it’s over!  Oh, and incase you are wondering, I don’t have any trouble going through airport security.  The doc did tell me that I might possibly cause the medal detectors to go off!  LOL  So far I’ve made it through just fine!  ðŸ™‚

I have had 3 broken bones as an adult in the past 7 years :/  
1)  Fracture on the top of my right food when I was pregnant with my son.   2)  Fractured my little toe on my left food by kicking it on the wooden dog bed in the night.   3)  I broke my right hand this past fall.  That was the worst!
Ok, enough about my bones.
I was born on fathers day.
My sister was born on mothers day.
I’m not lying.  

In high school, I decided I was going to be a marine biologist (I love the OCEAN!!!), but then I realized that job might compete with the other job I wanted:  stay-at-home mom!  I’ve been able to work my side jobs around my career as homemaker:  personal training, group fitness classes, 

I get a headache if I sleep past 8 am, 
no matter what time I go to sleep!?!?

Well, there it is.  
I hope you feel like you know me a little better now.
