REVIEW: COLOSSEUM FITNESS APPAREL

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing this really cool brand of fitness apparel called COLOSSEUM.  I sent them my size and they sent me a pair of leggings, tank and sports bra.   First reaction… REALLY CUTE!  I was just hoping the size I gave them was gonna work with their brand.  So I tried it all on and was HAPPY it all fit perfectly!  True to size from my experience.
First off, my legs are really long and for me this length was perfect.  They go down to my ankles with little bunching.   They fit my legs perfectly without being too tight.  It was NOT a frustrating moment getting into them.  You know what I mean if you wear these kind of leggings.  The routine of laying on the bed pulling them over your ankles and then working them up the legs to the hips – that did not happen with these pants.  They provide a nice fit without squishing unwanted “stuff” in the wrong place thanks to the body countering seams.  It’s made with C-dri moisture management fabric which allows for fast drying and keeps moisture away from the skin.   I did wear these out on a hot day and could tell a difference from my other long leggings for sure.  Also, I love the details.  There is a reflective strip running vertically along the calf and mesh ventilation panel behind the knee!  Cool stuff.  Perfect for my friend Shannon who was just telling me the other day that she had to seriously wipe down her Pilates Reformer machine after her workout because the back of her knees got so sweaty!  LOL  They do have a back security pocket with with autolock zipper closure and one more detail I like – turn the top down and find a fun shade of green!
I have black, but you can also get them in Charcoal and Pink Raspberry (Super cute!)
So this bra is reversible!!!  LOVE THAT!  You can see from the photo above the pink and black stripes that are a lot of fun.  And below I’m showing the side with solid pink, trimmed out in black.  THE FIT:  Ok, I have a bazillion of these.  My “girls” are on the larger side and I need to give them plenty of support.  But I keep buying soft sports bras in hopes of having one comfortable enough to wear casually.  I think that the fact that I keep buying them can tell us that I’ve not been super happy with what I’ve tried.  Now, 100% honest, I really like this one.  It’s softer and more comfy than any of my others.  No I will not go running or do a plyo workout in this alone, but I can wear it teaching Pilates or just hanging out with a cute summer top.  So I’m very happy with this.  Other cute color options:  Chambray/Black, Lemongrass/Black, White/Black and I am wearing the Pink Raspberry/Black

I really love this tank.  Like the leggings, the tank is also made made with C-dri moisture management fabric.  I like that it’s a cute fitted top without being hot.  I really love the contouring lines that emphasize body lines and the straps are super cute and provide some support and full range of motion.  It has a built-in bra with removable cups.  And ya know when those pads get all messed up…  well these are really easy to straighten up.  Remember our discussion earlier about “support”?  Well this provides enough for a Pilates workout, but I’ll have to add a layer of love when I teach my Tye4® Fusion Class.  It’s important to me to have a top that’s long enough and won’t ride up.  I’m happy to say this one fits the bill.  This Charcoal/Black is my favorite, but it also comes in Pink Raspberry, LT Chambray and White/Citrine which are all very cute.   I absolutely recommend it!

I put both the leggings and the tank to the test with the Pilates Roll-Up… because during this exercise, it’s common for the pants to scoot down while the top scoots up.  If you’ve done Pilates, you know what I’m talking about!  So, after my testing,  I’m happy to say BOTH the leggings and the tank stayed in place!  Whoop Whoop!  Love it!

I did try out my new threads while teaching a Tye4 Fusion Class.  We do Aerobic, Strength and Pilates fitness in this class.  Looking back on the class, I’m realizing that I didn’t think about my clothing at all during the class – meaning they were not fussy, so YES they pass the instructor test!

REVIEW: H3O AQUATICS

I’m so excited to tell you about a cool new place to get healthy and fit.  It’s called H3O AQUATICS.
–Health, Healing, Hope, Outreach Aquatics.
They are a medical rehabilitation facility that provides physical therapy, personal training and small group exercise classes in their indoor heated pools.  Read more here. Take a look at all those toys to help get you moving and strong.  I like the parallel bars under the water.

They even have treadmills… in the water!!! Yup these are motorized underwater treadmills.  Super cool.  Run or walk forwards or backwards… or work lateral movements.  There is so much fun to be had right there.

They also have a HydroMessage bed!  Yes ma’am that’s good stuff right there.  I tried it and can honestly say I am positive I want one at my house.   Anyone want to give me one?  No?
Well until then I’m happy to use this one 🙂
You can also rent the space for parties.  We just had my baby’s 13th b-day party there…  Hold on a sec.  Did I just say I have a 13 year old now?  Ugh, I’m going to need a moment….

Alright, that might take a minute to get use to.

So back to the review… this was such a fun party!  Had music, lights and plenty of laughing and splashing. And the moms took turns enjoying the HydroMassage bed!  That’s a nice time had by all. The last part of the party we put up a volleyball net and the kids went to town.  So much fun.

Thank you H3O Aquatics for hosting us!!!!

TIPS & TOOLS: OUTDOOR FITNESS

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY SARA UPTON
Sara is a recent college grad making her way into the online journalism scene primarily through articles on her biggest passion:  fitness and tech.

The cold winter weather has kept a lot of us stuck inside on treadmills the last few months, when we would rather be pounding the pavement in the sunshine. Thankfully, the last of the late season snow is melting, and the spring and summer weather is finally on its way in. When it starts to warm up, moving your fitness plan outdoors is a great way to shake up an otherwise monotonous routine, but there are a few things you should consider first. Whether you’ve been working out for years, or you’re more a novice, it’s important to remember to take a few basic safety precautions before changing up any workout plan.

Even though running around the park or biking your neighborhood greenway might not make you feel like you’re out battling the elements, you shouldn’t underestimate the effect of being without the comforts that come from working out at home or a gym. For example, you won’t constantly have access to water. Staying hydrated is critical anytime you’re exerting yourself, especially when the temperature heats up. If you’re someone that pauses several times throughout your routine to take a sip, consider investing in a runner’s belt with a bottle holder. You can also opt for an inexpensive hydration pack such as High Sierra’s Wave 70 that you can wear on your back, or FitSip’s pack that you can strap to your wrist. You might not feel you need it now, during the more mild weather, but when the temperature starts to climb, you’ll be happy you have it.

When exercising outdoors, you’ll also have to do without the convenience of grabbing your treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical’s handles, and getting a accurate heart rate report. Monitoring and staying within your target heart rate zone helps you burn the maximum amount of calories and keeps your workouts safe. Samsung highlighted the importance of tracking your heart rate on the go with their new Galaxy S5 design. Verizon Wireless stated that in staying consistent with their dedication to a healthy lifestyle, the S5 will include the first ever built-in heart rate monitor, allowing users to check their heart rate with just the touch of a finger. Samsung is hopeful that the accessibility of the feature will encourage more people to keep track of their heart rate when working out. Pacing yourself within the correct range will allow you a longer, more effective workout in the long run.

You might also be surprised at the impact that different terrains can have your workout. Unless you’re employing specific programs when using a cardio machine, you probably aren’t used to the constant change in incline and the uneven surfaces that come with exercising outdoors. There are several different apps you can use to plan a route suited for your fitness level and goals. AllTrails provides hikers and bikers with detailed maps of nearby trails. Users can check descriptions and reviews of over 50,000 trails in order to determine their trails length, difficulty level, and even exciting stops to make along the way.

It can also be easy to lose track of how far you’ve traveled before you realize you’re tired. However, the added challenge of exercising outdoors is that you have to be able to make your way back, no matter how exhausted you are. MapMyHike GPS is a great app to use as a pedometer, and the voice prompts will alert you over your music when you have reached distance markers you can set yourself. The GPS feature will help you log which directions you take, and save the route you took for future use.

Try not to push yourself too hard when mixing up your routine for the first time, and don’t underestimate the basics. Even seemingly obvious things such as checking the weather for the temperature and humidity can help make or break your workout. When you’re comfortable in the new environment, feel free to kick up the intensity a little and challenging yourself.

Stay smart and grab some fresh air—the pavement is calling your name!

REVIEW: CPR & FIRST AID TRAINING – ARE YOU PREPARED?

I don’t know if I’m the only one like this, but I often play out the scenario of being the first responder on the scene of an accident.  What would I do?  Would I freak out?  How fast and efficient would I respond?  Working in fitness centers has absolutely conditioned me to pay attention to people and their safety and being a mom has made me be on the verge of paranoid in making sure my kids are safe.   I’m thankful for accessible and quality First Aid/CPR training as a pedestrian, as a fitness instructor/personal trainer and as a parent.
